When people complain about having dull skin, they can be talking about skin that doesn’t have the glow it once did or skin that has an uneven texture or tone. Actually, “dull skin” is a phrase that can mean anything, but if this is a problem you’re having with your own skin, don’t worry because this article is here to help.
What Causes Dull Skin?
Dull skin can be caused by a lot of things, but one of the easiest to rectify is a need to exfoliate. If you’re not exfoliating once or twice a week, the dead skin cells on your face are not eliminated, so they clog up pores and cause the skin to look dull and tired. Other causes of dull skin include:
- Being dehydrated
- Environmental factors, including dry or windy weather
- Not enough sleep
- Poor diet
- Stress
- The aging process
Fortunately, there is something that you can do about most of these things, so getting back the bright, young-looking skin you once had is not impossible. Here are some of the things you can do to get started on your journey towards better-looking skin.
Step 1: Clean the Skin Well
Clean skin is healthy skin, and if you’re one of these women who goes to bed without removing your makeup, even occasionally — stop!
Skin needs to be cleaned morning and night to look good, and it starts with knowing your skin type so that you can buy the right products. Once you’ve done that, just follow the instructions on the packaging, and always start with washing your hands before you touch your skin.
In addition, never rub the skin too hard, make sure that your skin is rinsed off (with warm water, not hot) completely, then take a soft dry towel and pat the skin dry. Do not rub the skin dry. Once the skin has been washed and is dry, you can go to the next step.
Step 2: Steam Clean Your Face
In the olden days, women gave their faces a good steam-cleaning on a regular basis, and although there are some great facial care products on the market today, this is still one of the best ways to get your face “squeaky” clean. You can do this one of two ways.
First, you can take a washcloth and dip it in hot water, then place it on your face and let it sit for up to ten minutes.
The second method involves a bowl that you pour steaming water in. Put some water on the stove and turn it off when it’s almost boiling for the best effect. Once the water is in the bowl, sit in front of it with your face as close to the bowl as possible. Remain in this position for five minutes.
Although the washcloth method is easier, the bowl method is the most effective, but it’s really up to you to decide which one is best for your skin.
Step 3: Exfoliate the Skin
As mentioned previously, this is a crucial skincare tip when you’re trying to relieve dull-looking skin. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells so that new cells can grow, and there are two main types:
- Chemical exfoliation. Don’t let the name scare you. “Chemicals,” in this case, refer to things such as citric acid, i.e., lemons; and lactic acid, which is found in milk. There are dozens of exfoliation products now on the market with these ingredients in them, and they work wonderfully.
- Physical exfoliation. Physical exfoliation refers to tiny microscopic-sized pieces that gently remove the dead skin cells from your face. Some of these types of products on the market include items such as rice powder, grains of sugar, or even very small bits of walnut husks.
In addition to these, you can always make your own exfoliation products if you do some research on the subject. The good part about these is that you can make most of them with things that you already have around the house!
Step 4: Use a Facial Mask
Once you clean, steam, and exfoliate your skin, it’s time for a facial mask! There are so many types of facial masks on the market that your head might spin looking for the perfect one for your skincare needs. It’s easier if you first decide which ingredients are your favorite, then try to find a product with those things in it. Some of the best ingredients to look for in a facial mask include:
- Aloe vera
- Avocado
- Citrus fruits
- Coconut oil/milk
- Eggs
- Fresh mint
- Oatmeal
- White sugar
- Yogurt
This is another time when you’ll want to make sure you get a product made for your specific skin type. And if you have dry or oily skin, it’s recommended that you keep it on for only 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 5: Moisturize!
Everyone needs a moisturizer applied twice a day, even if your skin is oily. A good moisturizer helps skin look young in part because it prevents skin cells from dying before their time, both now and in the future.
But most of all, any type of skin can dry out if it isn’t moisturized regularly, so make sure that you get a high-quality moisturizer made for your skin type and use it regularly from now on. Even if it isn’t your exfoliation day, using a moisturizer twice a day will work wonders for your skin.
Having dull skin can be stressful, so it’s good to know that you can get rid of that skin by simply following a few simple beauty tips. Since the steps above only need to be followed one to two times a week, it shouldn’t slow you down when you’re going through your skincare routine. Best of all, the steps are easy and make your skin feel great when you’re done.
There’s also no need to take a lot of time or spend a lot of money just to get rid of your dull skin. Just jump right in and start following these simple suggestions for brighter and younger-looking skin!
